What Will You Do with the Next 5 Minutes? (Press Release)

Press release date: 2010-04-28

What Will You Do with the Next 5 Minutes?

What can you do alone in 5 minutes?
- Make Jell-O.
- Load laundry.
- Write a grocery list.
- Check email.
- Water the plants.
- Walk the dog.
What can you do with your children in 5 minutes?
- Make a tornado.
- Load a time capsule.
- Write a letter puzzle.
- Create a bedroom mailbox.
- Conduct a water orchestra.
- Walk in an animal walk parade.
- Make a "My Color Book."

What will you do with the next 5 minutes? Sometimes you can do both! While in the kitchen fixing dinner, help your child create a tornado in a jar. While you are writing your grocery list, your child can be writing a letter puzzle. Turn an everyday dog walking into an animal walk parade. In The Five Minute Parent: Fun & Fast Activities for You and Your Little Ones (©2002, www.bayoupublishing.com), Deborah Shelton helps you see how many things can be made fun for you and your child with just a little extra effort.

---- Pull-Out Box 1 -----

Animal Walk Parade

Materials: radio
silliness

Directions: First, each person in the parade picks their favorite animal. Here's the silly part: Form a straight line, turn the music on and walk and *dance* the way your animal would! If you're an elephant, use your arm as the trunk. Stretch your neck and hold your head up high if you're a giraffe. If you're a bird, flap your wings!

---- Pull-Out Box 2 -----

Time In a Box

Materials: small plastic box with lid or shoebox
family photos
scissors
glue
markers
miscellaneous family mementos

Directions: Decorate the outside of your time capsule with family photos and label it “Our Family” and write the year. Fill the capsule with mementos such as baby pictures, movies stubs, newspaper clippings, and any personal items that the family will enjoy seeing 5 or 10 years from now. Mom and Dad can put the box in a safe, dry place inside the house, instead of burying it in the yard.

---- Pull-Out Box 3 -----

Letter Puzzles

Materials: writing paper
pen or markers
scissors
envelope & postage stamp

Directions: First, write a letter to Grandma and Grandpa or a friend who lives far away. Cut the letter into large, connecting puzzle pieces. Now place the pieces into the envelope and mail! In order to read your letter, the person has to put the puzzle together first!
